This shoot began with trust. A well-known makeup artist who had known Lumera Studio and our work for a long time contacted us to arrange a model photography session in Jaffna.
The concept was centred around a traditional Tamil cultural aesthetic, with the styling, makeup, saree and setting all designed to create a portrait series that felt elegant, refined and culturally rooted.
The model travelled from Colombo to Jaffna for the session. Unlike the makeup artist, she had not previously worked with Lumera and was not very familiar with our photography before arriving.
Rather than relying only on formal poses, the session was built around expression, styling, movement and the atmosphere of the traditional set. The rich saree tones, jewellery, floral details and heritage-inspired background became part of the visual language of the shoot, while the model remained the clear focus of every frame.
The goal was not simply to create a conventional model portrait. We wanted the final photographs to feel like a modern interpretation of Tamil cultural portrait photography in Jaffna - polished enough for a fashion-oriented shoot, while still respecting the character of the traditional concept.
Throughout the session, the collaboration between the model, makeup artist and Lumera team became increasingly natural. Fresh ideas developed as the shoot progressed, allowing the final images to go beyond the original expectations.
When the photographs were shared, both the model and the makeup artist were extremely happy with the outcome.
For the model, it was also her first real introduction to Lumera’s work. After seeing the final results, she told us how much she enjoyed the photographs and the overall experience, and said she would happily recommend Lumera to friends and others in Colombo.
She said, “Whenever I come back to Jaffna, I want to do another shoot with Lumera.”
For us, that is what makes a creative session successful. It is not only about producing a strong photograph - it is about creating an experience that turns a first-time client into someone who wants to return.
